Unlike most iconic pop music, the Beach Boys’ “Pet Sounds” never hits you over the head with its greatness. But as it turns 50, its enduring beauty only glows brighter.

Pet Sounds is certainly an influential album, and has some great tracks. Sloop John B, although a cover, is my favourite here. God Only Knows and Wouldn’t It Be Nice are also sun-drenched classics.

“Pet Sounds” has been well served over the years in reissues, and die-hards will already own a lot of what’s here.

Pet Sounds, which was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998, is now one of popular music's most-cited influences, and critics regularly hail it as one of the greatest albums ever recorded.

With “Pet Sounds,” you’ve got one sound effect — at the very end of the album. But it is a lot of fun to it when it comes, finally, with the sound of the train and the dog.

"Pet Sounds" regularly turns up at or near the top of "best albums of all time" lists, with good reason. By the mid-1960s, Wilson had already quit touring with the Beach Boys.
