When Toronto Blue Jays starter Eric Lauer appeared with a busted lip before cameras last week, none were to surprised when he accused teammate Max Scherzer of giving him “six stitches” for messing with him on his start day. The unwritten rule stands across the game: DO NOT talk to the starting pitcher on his start day.

However, the alleged assailant later spilled the beans, with Scherzer revealing the claim was just Lauer and fellow starter Chris Bassitt having some fun. “No, I did not punch Eric Lauer in the face,” Scherzer said with a laugh when asked about the incident by Sportsnet’s Hazel Mae.
