Water main break found in Buxton The National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City has issued a Flood Watch in effect for our region from late on Saturday, Aug. 23 until 5 p.m. on Sunday, Aug.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation said N.C. 12 is closed from the Oregon Inlet to Hatteras Village due to unsafe driving conditions. The NCDOT said NC 12 remains closed at the Marc Basnight Bridge as Hurricane Erin continues to move offshore.
Forecasters predicted the storm would peak Thursday and said it could regain strength but was expected to turn out to sea.
As Hurricane Erin edged closer to the Outer Banks of North Carolina this week, much attention has been placed on Highway 12, a roughly 150-mile-long byway that connects that state’s islands and peninsulas. It is beloved by locals and tourists because of its scenic views of the ocean, sand dunes and old lighthouses.

Erin made a turn to the northeast and was finally moving away from the United States as a weakened Category 1 hurricane, according to the National Hurricane Center. The storm passed as close as about 200 miles from the North Carolina coast.
