After naming Jeff Ulbrich as defensive coordinator on Sunday, the Atlanta Falcons have shifted their focus to finding a new defensive line coach. According to a report from NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the team is interviewing Houston Texans assistant defensive line coach Nate Ollie.
FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) — Jeff Ulbrich expressed some regrets about the way he handled his 12-game stint as the New York Jets interim coach as he looked ahead on Monday to his new job as defensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons.
One of those names is interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich. Originally the defensive coordinator but promoted to the role after New York fired Robert Saleh, Ulbrich went 3-9 at the helm and failed to turn around the Jets season. After interviewing for the head coaching job last week, Ulbrich didn't want to wait to be told no by New York.
The Falcons fired defensive coordinator Jimmy Lake and defensive line coach Jay Rodgers after an underwhelming season in Atlanta. The defense finished 23rd in points allowed and 23rd in total yards, while ranking 31st in total sacks last season.
The moves come six days after Jeff Ulbrich, who spent much of last season as the New York Jets interim coach, was named the Falcons’ defensive coordinator.
