MULLICA HILL, N.J. -- Officials in southern New Jersey are reporting devastating storm damage after a tornado swept through the region on Wednesday.
Another tornado also started in Jackson Twp. and moved into Howell Twp. That tornado was rated as an EF-2 with wind speeds up to 120 mph. It touched down at 7:33 p.m. and lifted just one minute later.
Severe weather caused damage across the region Tuesday, even triggering a tornado warning in parts of New Jersey. It was issued for parts of Ocean and Monmouth counties, and expired at 7:15 p.m.
The most tornadoes in a single day in New Jersey were seven in 1989. The second most was five tornadoes on March 10, 1964, a record that was tied Thursday night.
JACKSON TOWNSHIP, New Jersey (WABC) -- Cleanup efforts continue across New Jersey on Monday after the National Weather Service confirmed six tornadoes touched down on Saturday.
Earlier Wednesday, a tornado warning in New Castle County, Delaware, expired at around 9:15 p.m. A severe thunderstorm watch was in effect across much of the Philadelphia region for Wednesday evening.
New Jersey was already under a state of emergency due to flooding concerns as of 2 p.m. A statewide flood watch runs until 6 a.m. Friday for most of the state.
This pair of twisters were a reminder that while severe weather is most common in the afternoon and evening, it can happen anytime of day.
