Coast Guard Petty Officer Scott Ruskan from NJ has been hailed an "American hero" for rescuing those in the Texas floods. Here's what to know.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Tx — A rescue swimmer assigned to U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Corpus Christi is being called a hero for rescuing 165 from Camp Mystic during the July 4th flooding disaster. Petty Officer Scott Ruskan says his rescue team was sent to Central Texas on what should have been a 1-hour flight.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem wrote on X: "United States Coast Guard Rescue Swimmer and Petty Officer Scott Ruskin, directly saved an astonishing 165 victims in the devastating flooding in central Texas. This was the first rescue mission of his career and he was the only triage coordinator at the scene. Scott Ruskin is an American hero."
