A fatal crash in the northwest metro closed a portion of Highway 10 for several hours Wednesday morning.According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the crash happened around 7:40 a.m. near Big Lake. A Ford Fusion traveling westbound on the highway collided with a Nissan Altima that was trying to cross the intersection at 172nd Street Northwest.

The Minnesota State Patrol’s preliminary crash report says a 25-year-old Elk River man was driving west on Highway 10 when the driver of a Nissan Altima crossed the road at 172nd Street Northwest, and the two cars collided in the intersection.

A 40-year-old woman was killed in a crash in Big Lake township Wednesday morning, according to a news release from Minnesota State Patrol. A 25-year-old Elk River man was driving a Ford Fusion west on Highway 10 and a 40-year-old Big Lake woman was driving a Nissan Altima across the highway around 7:40 a.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the westbound portion of the highway between 172nd Street and Industrial Drive Northeast will be closed until around 11 a.m.
