PORTLAND, Ore. (KGW) -- Tsunami alerts were issued for Japan, Hawaii and Alaska after an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 8.7 hit near Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula.

"As soon as we heard the tsunami warnings, we contacted local law enforcement and FEMA to ensure the road was opened. Any reports otherwise are false," Winfrey's representative said in a statement.
