Witnesses and health workers say Israeli forces have opened fire near two aid distribution sites run by the Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation as crowds of hungry Palestinians sought food.

CAIRO/JERUSALEM, Aug 1 (Reuters) - President Donald Trump's Middle East envoy visited a U.S.-backed aid operation in Gaza on Friday, which the United Nations has partly blamed for deadly conditions in the enclave, saying he sought to get food and other aid to people there.

A State Department spokesperson said that the U.S. has given roughly $3 million to the Gaza food distribution program. Trump has claimed $60 million.
